Swap, Don’t Shop: Taunton Community Takes on Fast Fashion 

West Monkton Parish Council is inviting local residents to take a simple but powerful step towards more sustainable living at its upcoming “Swish” clothes swap event in Taunton. Designed to bring the community together while tackling textile waste, the event offers a practical alternative to the throwaway culture associated with fast fashion. 

 

The Swish event will take place at Brittons Ash Community Hall, Bathpool, Taunton (TA2 8FT) on Saturday 18th April from 12 noon to 4pm. Residents are encouraged to bring along good-quality, clean clothing items they no longer wear and exchange them for “new-to-you” pieces. The concept is straightforward: refresh your wardrobe without spending money and without contributing to landfill. Any remaining items are typically donated or responsibly reused, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

Events like this are becoming increasingly important. According to environmental charity WRAP, over 300,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfill in the UK every year, with a value of around £140 million in wasted resources. Even more concerning, recent figures suggest that nearly half (49%) of used textiles are simply thrown into general waste, with each person discarding an average of 35 items annually. 

 

The environmental impact goes far beyond landfill. The global fashion industry is responsible for an estimated 4–8% of greenhouse gas emissions, while also consuming vast amounts of water, energy and raw materials. Extending the life of clothing through reuse, repair and swapping is one of the most effective ways individuals can reduce their environmental footprint. 

 

West Monkton Parish Council has a strong track record of supporting community-led environmental initiatives, from repair cafés to community fridges, all aimed at reducing waste and strengthening local connections. The Swish event builds on this ethos, offering a fun, social and sustainable way to rethink how we value our clothes. 

 

Residents of all ages are welcome to attend, whether bringing items to swap or simply browsing. In a world of fast fashion, this local event is a reminder that small community actions can make a big difference.
