Street Bins are NOT for Household Waste

We are blessed to have a number of litter picking volunteers who dedicate hours of their time to keeping our community as litter free as possible. Whilst out and about they help to report issues, and have been instrumental in the introduction of several improvements such as containers filled with dog poo bags and lids on open bins.

Unfortunately several bins in our community have recently been found overflowing, and on investigation these have been found to contain lots of carrier bags full of waste, which is very obviously household waste, not street litter. Street bins in our community are emptied on a weekly basis and increasing the frequency costs money that can then not be used for other services and initiatives.

Please can we ask all in our community NOT to use street bins for waste from your household.

Somerset Council provide one 180 litre black bin per household for non-recyclable waste, which is emptied once every three weeks. One black bin is suitable for most households, given the wide range of items that can now be recycled in Somerset. Somerset Council understand however, that everyone’s circumstances will be different and that the standard size wheelie bin may be a challenge for some.

If one black bin is not enough for your household, and you meet one or more of the following conditions, you can apply for an extra (or larger) black bin:

• There are five or more people in your house.
• Someone has a medical condition that creates extra rubbish.
• You have two or more children in nappies.
