Almost 100 local people attended the Free Family Festival of Cycling organised by West Monkton Parish Council: from aged 10 weeks old to those who have found a love of cycling/ rekindled a love of cycling in retirement years – and every age in between!

Thanks to the support of Avon and Somerset Police, On Your Bike, Somerset Road Safety, Taunton Area Cycling Campaign and the Co op Pioneer Community Team attendees were able to:

✅Get their family’s bicycles marked with National Bike Mark scheme – you are far less likely to have your bike stolen if it is BikeRegister marked and the scheme is used by every Police Force in the UK to reunite hundreds of stolen bikes to their owners every year.
🚳Learn about staying safe on our roads, as Somerset Road Safety brought their display vehicle and team members, knowledgeable in all things road safety and with plenty of information to give away.
🚴‍♀️Pick up maps and leaflets from Taunton Area Cycling Campaign, detailing all the great cycle routes we have across Taunton as well as take home 1.5M distance hi vis vests and backpack covers.
🔧Get their bikes checked with a free Dr Bike mini maintenance check from Derek, the bike maintenance expert at On Your Bike – he had a tool for everything!
🥤Use pedal power to make a fruit smoothie with Tracey from the On Your Bike team – as well as learn about the services they offer including bike sales and refurbishment, bike maintenance service and workshops plus the wonderful community work the charity does to combat mental health issues and isolation.
🛍 Speak to the Co op Pioneer Community team about how the local community can help Co op to support local projects (including Our Community Fridge – Monkton Heathfield) through their membership scheme (which also gives customer rewards). Co op stores at Monkton Heathfield and Cheddon Road also very kindly donated the fruit used in the smoothie bike blenders, with surplus at the end of the event going to the Community Fridge.
🚴‍♀️Pick up ‘Safer to School’ hi vis vests for all the family, funded by West Monkton Parish Council as well as free reflector fobs to add to school coats, back packs and book bags.
🍪 Stop for free refreshments and a chat at the Community Cafe, with seating both inside and outdoors in the un-seasonal warm temperatures!
📜 Enter the Poster Competition to win cycle related prizes – posters are on display in the Brittons Ash Community Hall lobby.
Heartfelt thanks from West Monkton Parish Council to the organisations listed above for their time and support in running this popular event, our lovely volunteers who helped with set up, tidy up and run the Community Cafe – and of course all those who joined us at the event.
