The Rev’d Julia French, assisted by Lay Minister Rosie Brown, led a Service at Somerset Wood to remember those from the county who gave their lives in the First World War.
We were honoured this year to have Deputy Lord Lieutenant Brigadier Richard Toomey, some members of 40 Commando, the Vice Chair of Somerset Council Lee Baker, the Deputy Mayor of Taunton Town Council Vanessa Garside, The Royal British Legion County Chairman Major Robert McDonald, Bugler Luis Martelo, 4 Standard Bearers, and members of both Cheddon Fitzpaine & West Monkton Parish Councils, alongside approximately 100 schoolchildren from local schools. The children were a credit to their teachers and parents, as well as being word perfect with the responses.
Thanks were given to all those attending, especially for the provision of the service sheets, the crocheting of poppies, RBL support, and the Somerset Wood Volunteers who maintain the site. The wet weather abated for the service, albeit the wind was challenging! The service is enhanced each year, and is well supported by the community.
