This guide is only an aid to help you make the best decision for your particular circumstances, it is not a “must do” list of instructions, common sense must always be applied.
Prepare:
Have a general contact list
Have a family and other household residents contact list
Know where service cut-off’s are (Electricity, Gas, Water).
Who can help / who can you help (family, neighbours, elderly, vulnerable)?
Family and pets evacuation plan.
Work out how you’ll take medication and other essentials with you.

Listen to the local radio for updates
Let family members know that you are safe.
React:
Move pets, vehicles, medication, important documents and other essentials to a safe place.
Protect your property: Hydro snakes, Flood Gates, Sand Bags, Air Brick covers.
Put a bag with soil or sand in the toilet.
Switch off gas, electricity and water at the mains
Plug sinks, baths and low level shower trays and weigh them down to prevent back-flow.
Move electrical appliances and furniture as high as possible.
In case of water entering the house, wear wellies and evacuate to somewhere safe.
Keep a torch with batteries with you.
Avoid electric shocks – keep electric cables out of the water.
