Climate Focused Share Event Benefits All 

For the fourth time, residents across Monkton Heathfield, Bathpool and West Monkton were invited to a sustainability-friendly, free of charge share event, giving them the chance to pass on books, toys and games no longer needed as well as pick up new-to-them items more suitable to their age group. There was also the opportunity to give away plants and take home something new for the garden or window sill. Organised by West Monkton Parish Council, the event enabled locals to have a good clear out at home, knowing that what they brought along would find a new home with someone else. Surplus items at the end of the event were then donated to Taunton charity Compass Wellbeing, to assist with a ‘Lots for Tots’ fundraiser. 

West Monkton Parish Clerk Amy Shepherd explains “Focus on our local environment and sustainability is one of our main aims as a Parish Council, as we want to support change in our community. Throughout the year we take positive action that is mindful of climate change, the effects our immediate vicinity and the planet as a whole, making sure we are preserving and protecting our area for future generations”. 

Assistant Clerk Community, Kate Welsh adds “Alongside our volunteer led Community Fridge and Community Garden initiatives that support each other by providing healthy fruit and vegetables for our community, reducing food waste and helping vulnerable families and individuals locally, we aim to run a number of green-focused events, assisting our residents to live more sustainably. The Community Share event is just one example of this, giving local families the opportunity to pass on books, toys and games that they no longer use to other families, something that has become more significant in the difficult economic times we face at present.”
